Bethan, a mum of two, joined Women Construct Wales to boost her self-esteem and learn the skills needed to repair her own home.
Attending twice a week for over six months, she built strong relationships with the tutors, who praised her focus and commitment to learning. As she gained confidence in her DIY skills, she independently repaired several fixtures in her home, applying what she learned directly to her everyday life.
Bethan became a key member of the group, forming lasting connections with other participants. Over time, her self-esteem and mental well-being improved significantly.
With her newfound confidence, Bethan reflected on her future and realised she wanted a job that aligned with her well-being and progression goals. With support, she secured a new role in a company that offers the environment she was looking for.
We sat down with Bethan following her learning journey for a short Q&A to hear more about her experience. Here’s what she had to say:
Q:How did you feel when you first joined the project?
At the beginning of the project I was nervous that my lack of confidence would hinder me from seeing any benefits from taking part. My self-esteem has always been quite debilitating, so to push myself to try something new that I had little experience in was quite daunting but I was determined to push myself to gain invaluable knowledge that I could apply to my own home projects.
Q:What do you feel you have gained from being part of Women Construct Wales?
I have gained so much from being part of the WCW project. My confidence and self-esteem have grown phenomenally. The skills I have learnt are invaluable and allow me to undertake tasks I never imagined I would feel comfortable doing on my own. Not only has it provided me with the ability to make my own home more comfortable but it is also shaping the career prospects that I am considering in the future.

Q:Was there anything about the project that surprised you?
A:What surprised me most about the project was the bonds I made with both the other participants and the tutors. The tutors have been incredible at making me feel comfortable enough to have a go at different tasks without making it feel pressured. They have an abundance of knowledge and are happy to answer any questions or explain anything multiple times, or in more detail. They really have been the key to making me feel so comfortable throughout the project.
Q: Did the project meet your expectations?
The project exceeded any expectations I had. I went in knowing that I wasn’t going to become a master trades person by any means but the amount of skills I have gained have been amazing. I have been through this project from start to finish and I am gutted it’s come to an end!
Q: Do you think WCW could benefit other women, and if so, how?
WCW could benefit so many women. Whether it be to gain some experience of different trades to guide you of which course/career path to follow or to gain knowledge and confidence to undertake home improvements in your own home. Even if it isn’t something that you wish to pursue as a career, it provides the opportunity to grow your self esteem and confidence in socialising with other women of all ages and experiences.
